Strengthening Immunity - The Ayurveda Way

Your immune system is your body’s defense mechanism against any infections or diseases. A weak immune system can lead to several immunodeficiency disorders which can disrupt your normal life and may even be fatal, sometimes. Similarly, autoimmune diseases can happen when your overactive immune system is unable to distinguish between healthy tissue and potentially harmful antigens, mistakenly attacking your healthy body. Such diseases make it crucial that you have a healthy and balanced immune system with an active immune response to foreign infections or viruses.

In Ayurveda, such viruses are called as ‘Maha Shukshma Krimi’. They have been described in Ayurveda books like ‘Sushruta Samhita’ and ‘Charak Samhita’ as extremely small and invisible to the naked eye. These ‘krimis’ get inside your body and settle in your respiratory system causing cough, cold, extreme breathlessness and in some extreme cases, death. However, Ayurvedic scriptures also talk about how one can have a healthy immune system and avoid any kind of ‘krimis’.

3 Solutions Mentioned in Ancient Wisdom of Charak Samhita:

1. Limit exposure:

Limit your exposure to the environment outside your immediate family. This means avoiding meeting people and being around them so the virus can’t come in contact with you and your body. Maintaining proper hygiene and keeping your surroundings clean is also important.

2. Stop feeding the viral activity:

Any virus that enters your body multiplies and spreads with the help of toxin rich food items that you consume, which makes them stronger. So avoid consuming food items like wheat (gluten), red meat, fish and all kinds of dairy products like yoghurt, cheese and paneer. These food items increase the mucus build up in your respiratory system, making it difficult to fight these viruses; it becomes a breeding ground for them. Instead, have food items which help clear the mucus build up in your respiratory system like mung bean soup, vegetables, rice and millets. These food items work well together and weaken the virus in your body.

3. Take immunity-boosting herbs:

Ayurveda believes in the power of natural herbs and home remedies immensely. Herbs that help make your immune response faster and drain the liquid in your respiratory system are great for preventing any viruses or infections.

Here’s a quick little home remedy you can try, to help clear the respiratory passage and boost your immune system.

Just follow these steps –

  1. Pomegranate – ¼ fresh outer peel
  2. Add 2 glasses of water and boil and make a decoction
  3. Boil and make it 1/4th of a glass
  4. Take 20 fresh basil leaves, preferably Indian basil or tulsi (1 tsp dried basil powder), an inch of ginger root, an inch of turmeric root (or 1 tsp full of turmeric powder) and one black peppercorn.
  5. Crush them all together and add it in the boiling decoction.
  6. Let it simmer for a few minutes and strain in a cup.
  7. Sip it warm throughout the day.
